EBOLA FACTS FOR AFRICANS IN AFRICA AND IN DIASPORA

ourafrica:

What is Ebola?

  • Ebola is what scientists call a hemorrhagic fever - it operates by making its victims bleed from almost anywhere on their body. Usually, victims bleed to death from Ebola.

It is contagious!

  • It is being transmitted via contact with body fluids such as blood, saliva, semen or body discharges. Ebola however is NOT AIRBORNE!

High mortality rate

  • About 90% of people that catch Ebola will die from it. It’s one of the deadliest diseases in the world, killing in a few weeks.

Incurable

  • Ebola has no known treatment or cure. Victims are usually treated for symptoms with the faint hope that they recover.

What are the symptoms?

  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Diarrohea
  • Vomiting
  • Weakness
  • Joint, Muscle and stomach Pain
  • Lack of Appetite

How to protect yourself?

  • Maintain proper hygiene- Please wash your hands with soap every chance you get and invest in hand sanitizers
  • Stay away from road side meat/ street meat i.e  Bush meat and Suya ( Nigerians and Ghanaians especially)
  • Fumigate your environment if you notice pest around
  • Stay away from dead things - Dead bodies can still transmit Ebola ( Do not touch a dead mouse and/or rat with your hands).
  • Use protective gear- Especially if you are going to contaminated areas ( use facial masks!)
  • Report, Report, Report - If you suspect that you or anyone has shown signs and symptoms, call your doctor.
  • Educate your neighbours and friends - It’s better to be safe than sorry.

Top Ebola Doctor  from Sierra Leone has died.
Sierra Leone’s top Ebola doctor, Sheikh Umar Khan died  on Tuesday from complications of the disease.
He was the main doctor at the  front lines of what is now considered the worst Ebola outbreak in history, with 670 dead, primarily in West Africa. He is credited with treating more than 100 victims and has previously been hailed as a national hero.
One small bit of good news: The current outbreak has proven to be less deadly than previous strands of the disease. Instead of a 90% mortality rate, 60% of the infected have died. And in some areas in Guinea, the situation has stabilized, with Doctors Without Borders even closing one of its Ebola treatment centers.
Still, the fight continues…
